±1±: Best Buy I got this unit just a few days ago and I love it. I bought this to replace brand name pre-amp and amplifier separates, so I was wondering if this would compare to them in sound quality. It surely does compare to them.

I'm very impressed with this Onkyo unit. I had an Onkyo AM/FM tuner once which I liked, but this is my first Onkyo receiver.
The sound quality of this thing is super. The FM tuner in it isn't the best at pulling in stations but I have an older tuner I use for FM listening.

I use XM radio plugged into the tape output and it sounds very nice.

A DVD player into the digital coaxial output sounds very very nice.

I love being able to switch from tuner to CD or DVD, and adjust the volume with the remote.

Everything about it is very nice. It's very well built, user friendly, was packed very well, really nice remote control, and the instructions were easy to understand.

Though I love this unit and I have had no problems with it nor do I expect to, the toll free customer support is non existent. I called them many times and never got to talk to a rep, was always put on hold and at times for several minutes. I once left them a voicemail and asked them to return the call but they never did. I emailed them several times and never got a reply from those either. So, I don't know why theu even bother telling buyers about their toll free CS line.

But, the unit is real nice. I'm not sorry I bought it. on Sale!

The NetTune system works great. You need a Windows PC on your network to use this feature. Sound quality is great.

Both the R-872 and R-772 receivers are rated at 100 watts per channel for each of their 7 channels and both share a host of common features including: HDMI 1.3 switching; lossless audio decoding; AM/FM tuners with 30 presets; XM radio ready; automatic set-up with supplied microphone; Newcastles SNAPTM Room EQ; input renaming; A/V Synch Delay; digital/analog input polling; independent audio and video outputs for Zone 2; RS-232 port for bi-directional control and more.
The included remote supports dual-mode, RF and IR operation, is preprogrammed for most popular components, learns commands from other units and both receivers have built-in RF to IR translators. The translator converts RF input received from the remote and generates IR output to control other system components. Complete system operation is possibleeven if the entire system is out of sight.
A second feature developed for custom installation is these receivers' Automatic Room 2 mode. With this mode, the main room can be configured for 7.1 channel operation. When Zone 2 is activated, the main room is automatically reconfigured for 5.1 and the rear center amps are used to power Zone 2. When Zone 2 is turned off, the main room is reconfigured back to 7.1.
While both units transcode all analog video to a single component video output, the R-872 is extremely advanced. In keeping with the ease of use theme, the R-872 uses a Genesis Faroudja processor IC and can deinterlace and scale any of its video inputs, analog or digital, to 720p, 1080i or even 1080p and output them over HDMI. Should the user wish to have his video operate primarily in the analog domain, the R-872 will even convert digital video arriving over HDMI to component video. In either the digital or analog case, only a single monitor cable from the receiver to the display is sufficient for video and OSD.

±1±: Best Buy This was my first avr purchase. Overall, I really like this system. I am shocked to learn that AVR software is so outdated (like ms-dos) and no company has come out with better setup software and ease of use. I guess that is why AVR's are not as mainstream as they should be. The sound passed through this unit is very good. I have a Orb speakers hooked up to this unit which sound amazing. ±1±: Best Buy I bought this to replace my Sony receiver I purchased from Amazon 3 years ago (almost to the day). While there was nothing "wrong" with my Sony receiver, I quickly realized once I plugged the Onkyo in, that my surround speakers were not being utilized as they should be.

While I am not an audiophile, I do have some quality speakers, and I do like having a quaility sound while watching movies (and playing Xbox). The sound is so clear and crisp with this receiver. Further, the set up with the 4 HDMI inputs made my stereo cabinet so much cleaner, and I got rid of all of my YRW and RBG wires. I am sure I could have invested another 0 and really got some really high end equipment, but honestly, the Onkyo is worth it. The funny thing is, I spent the same amount on the new Onkyo as I did on the old Sony, and the difference is just amazing.

The on-screen set up is great. It makes customizing the inputs and the equilizer so easy. And the speaker test really lets you know what where you need to place you speakers. What else can I say about this product? Honestly, this is the best purchase I have made in a long time. I think the 4 HDMI inputs alone make this a must-have over any other receiver similarly priced. I almost bought another Sony instead of the Onkyo (mostly because I have never purchased anything other than Sony receivers), but I am glad I made the switch. Now that I have experienced Onkyo, I think I have made a life long switch.

If you have any hesitations about buying this product, please feel free to send me a message, and I will try to answer your question before you buy. And if you have never bought an Onkyo before, try it first, and I am pretty sure you will like it (I would almost guarantee it). If not, return it to Amazon. They are really good with returns. But I doubt you will even want to return it once you get it set up. on Sale!
